How a trommel screen works
Material is fed into a slowly rotating perforated drum set at a slight incline. Undersize material passes through the apertures as the drum tumbles the load; oversize material travels the length of the drum and discharges at the far end.
That simple mechanism is remarkably effective on municipal waste: the tumbling action also opens bags and liberates fines that a flat screen would leave trapped.
Where it fits in the line
In an MRF, the trommel is usually the first mechanical separation stage, removing grit and organics before manual sorting begins. In RDF production it removes the inert fines that would otherwise drag down calorific value.
In biomining, a mobile trommel is often the entire processing line — splitting excavated legacy waste into soil-like fines, combustibles and inerts on site.
